Two of Irelands’ finest in Dubai, THOMAS BROSNAN (Schull), executive chef at the Grand Hyatt and MICHAEL BURKE (Ballinasloe), who is in the property sector, have kindly volunteered to run the Dubai Marathon on 18th January, 2008 on behalf of the Dhaka Project, a charity that the Irish community in Dubai has generously supported over the past 5 years. In Dhaka – the worlds’ poorest city of 16 million – 80% of children don’t go to school. Instead, they scavenge the city dumps for recyclable material to supplement the family income.
What the Dhaka Project does:
-It rescues FAMILIES from the slums of Dhaka.
-It trains the parents for sustainable employment thus releasing the kids for schooling.
-It provides shelter, food, healthcare, mentoring / tutoring during the parent training period.
-It enrols kids in private schools to get them the basics which allows them into Public Schools, this process takes about 12 weeks
-It provides family housing for the rescued slum families, thus setting them up for life with a bit of dignity and self respect.
To date your generous contributions have been used to:
-House 55 families
-Train 80 women in order to allow them work as seamstresses,
-Get over 700 children onto the education ladder etc., etc.
Some of the costs involved:
-A singer sewing machine, 400 Dhs
-Educating a child in private school for 3 months, 95 Dhs
